Forgive Us

Who are you my gentle children? What souls are you, struggling so hard to be heard, to be respected? Yearning so for your mommy and daddy?

How wicked are we who serve you poison with life, leading you on as if we were your hope, your God, and then turning on you like the devil.

How can I explain to you who had no choice that you were sacrificed for the sake of choice? That your life was a burden to the mother who carried you?

No, you were not to blame. You are still being destroyed because we cannot bear to face the depth of our sin and cry out: “Lord, save us!”

How much will be demanded of us who ignored your silent cries to be coddled, to be smiled upon … to be loved.

Little one, hang on for yet a while longer. For soon comes the day when you will be touched only by love.

For even though a mother should forget her child, the One who fashioned your soul will never forsake you.

Hear our impoverished prayer, oh Lord. Though our sins be as scarlet, wash us whiter than snow. You alone have the power to make all things new.

Holy innocents, pray for us.
