Would that you would be hot or cold
Because you are lukewarm, I will spew you out of my mouth
It is easier to ask God for help with those things that fit the typical categories of petition and prayer than it is to bring those deeply disturbing or embarrassing situations to him. But to only ask for isolated needs every now and then points to a relationship with Christ that is fairly distant.
We don’t trouble God sometimes because we feel we should be able to cope or achieve what we want on our own. When, in reality, we should turn over every activity, disposition and relationship to him from the outset.
It is not a matter of keeping those areas of our lives where we feel capable and self-sufficient away from God and only turning over the areas to him where we come up short – or censoring our worst lapses. We need God’s blessing and graces on the whole of our lives.
It’s about sharing our whole life with him and allowing the Divine One to enrich every aspect of it.
It is about He and I – us – working and living together in a constant and close communion of life. And expanding that intimate, holy relationship to friendship with others.
I should never be so proud as to reserve or keep certain things from him who already knows everything about me.
We can go it alone or go with God. In short, with a faith that’s cold or hot. But, let’s not fool ourselves by living in an off-and-on lukewarm state.
Let’s share our lives with Christ and confide in him as intimate friends do with one another.
